how much prednisone per pound for a dog? coughs with tracheao problems since he had his teeth cleaned and pulled. It has been a week and still hacking away. Gets worse at night. I have 1mg. prednisone tablets, want to give that with some cough syrup. Need dosage amount, He weighs 8 lbs.

Starsfan14 replied: "Really you need to talk to a vet. Amounts vary between weight and the exact reason you are giving prednisone. Your vet know your dog best and can tell you how much to give, and if prednisone is even necessary. Another medication might be better in this instance."

miaugh replied: "This question should be answered by your vet, not here."

Jessica replied: "You NEVER want to give steroids without speaking to a Vet first. Your dog is most likely coughing from the breathing tube placed in the trachea to deliver oxygen and gas used to keep the dog sedated while having his dentistry done. The tube can sometimes cause irritation and coughing after wards. The dog could have also contracted "kennel cough" while @ the Vet's office. "Kennel Cough" is a general term used for both bacterial and viral upper respiratory infections. The bacterial form and "real kennel cough" is caused by Bordetella. If it's irritation from the breathing tube, the Vet may give you a cough syrup (like Hydrocodone) or give you a dosage for Robitussin. If the Vet thinks it may be kennel cough, he may give the cough syrup but also have you pick up some antibiotics. Plain and simple, call the Vet."

Is it alright to give Prednisone to a dog? My dog is constantly scratching and biting herself so much that blisters have appeared on her skin. I have taken one of my Prednisone pills and gave her 1/2 each day for 3 days. Will this do more harm than good?

Heavens Spirit replied: "Do not give it to your dog......unless prescribed by the Vet. The same goes with any medication for animal......and for human (unless prescribed by physician). No one should take another one's medication, same goes for animals.....one animal should not take human medication or another animals medication unless instructed to do so by the dog's vet."

Jackson A replied: "Prednisone is a steroid. That is for humans only, because it works on the human muscular system. I'd stop if I were you, it might mess up her muscles."

nanlwart replied: "Dosing and drugs for dogs are totally different than people. Don't use people drugs for dogs--go to a vet. If you want to use your pills, at least ask the vet first. Sheesh! You could kill your dog."

RomanceNdreams replied: "you should call your vet. or a 24 hour a day vet line. cortisone can be dangerous to the heart and moods of people, who knows what effect it will have on your pet! be careful. take the pooch to a doc and tell them what treatment you have administered. good luck."

Margaret replied: "It's never a good idea to give human medicine to an animal unless you have first gotten an OK from your veterinarian. The same drug that works well for one species might be toxic for another. Please have your dog looked at by a vet so that her problem can be diagnosed and treated properly."

kbcosp420 replied: "Give your dog a half or quarter of an allergy pill. Most likely your dog is experiencing some sort of allergic reaction to the blisters. Prednisone is a steroid and should definitely not be given to a dog. It probably would not kill the animal, but it would probably do more damage that it's worth. Your dog is allergic to something. Get your dog checked by a vet to assess the situation. For now, a half or quarter of a benedryal tablet should work just fine. Will not harm the dog either."

eshires01 replied: "no, No, NO!!! You do not give your dog your medication for 2 reasons. First, your medication was prescribed to be taken as directed and if you are giving your pills away, you are hurting your own condition. Second, your dog should be prescribed Pred by her Vet for proper dosage. Pred is a steroid and is designed to be started heavily and then tapered off in decreasing dosages for it to work properly... so you are not doing either of you any good. If your dog is scratching and biting herself, she needs to be seen by a Vet to determine WHY. Is it fleas? An allergic reaction to environmental or food substances? You'd do much better by giving her Benedryl in a dose that is comparative to her size until you can get to the Vet."

joyceguz20 replied: "First, Predisone for dogs, when prescribed by a vet usually is used in conjunction with an aantibiotic to help the healing process. You should never give your dog any human medication unless ok'd by your vet (and that's not going to happen) it can cause damage to liver, kidneys, etc., and worse be fatal! You need to have the vet check and diagnose the underling cause of the skin problem it could be allergies or something very serious. Dogs are much more senstive than people think. Depending on the manufacter, we can take some of their meds, i.e., amoxicillian but they can not take ours! Please let the vet do the diagnosing and prescribing. Good luck"

Peek, NEEDS prayers 4 my Mom replied: "yes it will help...1-800-petmeds.com you can order by pill. All you do is give your vets name and number , they never call. I can't really help unless I know these questions. How big is she ? How much does she weigh.. what kind of dog Fleas or ticks. If you have CORN in her food ..DUMP it. BAD BAD BAD for dogs. My dog was on and off for 13 yrs for allergies. How many milligrams is the pill? 5 mil? 10 mil. My lab was 80lbs. he was on it for a month. First day 2 pills..then every other day one pill..the you wean them off."

Nekkid Bootie replied: "it may do more harm than good.. expecially since you dont know what's causing her problem. Take your dog to a vet to get her properly diagnosed and treated. Steroids may actually worsen some conditions."

Birddogger replied: "Wait so you're asking after the fact whether or not what you have ALREADY done will hurt your dog? Yes prednisone is given to dogs but it must follow a strict dosage course to be effective. At best you've probably just thrown away those pills, at worst you've caused serious damage to the dog. If you're really, really lucky you've hit the right dosage by dumb luck but it won't do a thing unless you go to the vet and get the proper dosage for your dog and the specific condition, if prednisone is even a proper treatment. Even if it is it will likely have to be accompanied by another type of treatment."

Tact Challenged..... replied: "I know others have said the same thing, but common sense should have told you not to ever give an animal ANY kind of medication if it was not specifically prescribed for THAT animal. Besides, your dog needs to see a vet to find the reason she is scratching & biting herself to the point of blisters. Just taking care of the symptoms is NOT taking care of the problem & yes, you could be doing much more harm than good."

nancy b replied: "Prednisone masks the immune system and should only be used for allergies. If no allergy is present it may seem like your pet is getting better. As soon as it is taken off the pred. It will suffer 10 times worse if not an allergy. I recommend youy see your Vet. Pred. is a steriod and your pet should be weaned of it slowly. Bad move Dud!"

bybers are the best breeders :) replied: "my pom was put on predisone for her skin last yr.it helped but found out it was just dry skin i had her shaved hasnt had a problem since.mine was put on 1 pill every other day vet gave me 50 she still has about 30 left."

Alternatives to prednisone for itchy dog? We rescued a dog about 1.5 yrs ago. She has always been very itchy and on a few different meds. Vet thinks it is probably an allergy of some sort. She has always been on some sort of prednisone or prednisone-like medicine. I have recently been informed of its potentially hazardous affects and want to find an alternative. I have researched a bit and seen info about fatty acids as a substitute. Any other recommendations? Anything would be greatly appreciated. She's so itchy and I don't know what to do.

sistammm12 replied: "one-half tablet of benadrill is what my friends give there dog I think once a day. I always took prednisone for my asthma when I was younger not itching or anything"

jen replied: "My dogs are itchy too. Vet suggested an oatmeal based shampoo. So I bought one that also has aloe in it. I was also bathing my puppies too frequently (once a week). Vet said to bathe every 3-4 weeks. I personally wouldn't want to maintain my dogs on meds for an extended period of time. good luck!"

Annette replied: "Any skin disorder, like in humans, is most often caused by a toxic liver. Years of meds can do this. Research into detoxing the liver and see if the iching stops."

amethyst_dragon69 replied: "Ask your vet about Hydroxyzine, and ask about a Benedryl dose. Fatty acids are good, but don't really do much for itchyness."

trgger23 replied: "My dog has really bad skin and will actually scratch so much that she will give herself bare spots in her fur. I had tried numerous different treatments for her and found the best over the counter treatment for her was weekly oatmeal baths. It sounds so simple, but I promise it does a world of good. I buy the Aveeno brand oatmeal bath at walmart. It is inexpensive and has four packs to a box, so it lasts me a full month. Hope this helps!!"

daa replied: "Have you tried a different food? Corn, soy, and wheat products are common allergens found in many commercial dog foods. Some dogs may also be allergic to a particular protein source (e.g. chicken or beef), so a food with a different protein could help if that's the case. You might want to try a lamb-based food without corn, soy or wheat and see if there's any improvement in the itching. My food-allergic dog has been doing great on Wellness Super-5 mix lamb formula. Check the ingredient labels on treats, too."

Amanda replied: "APPLE CIDER VINEGAR it really works! My yorkie was miserable and we mixed up 1 part ACV and 3 parts water and sprayed on the spots that itch. I worked immediately!"

Should I give my dog Prednisone and Benadryl for Hives? I wanted to ask a question about hives and prednisone. My 5 month old boxer pup came in yesterday with a swollen face and hives. We assumed he had gotten stung by some sort of bug. We had to take him to the emergency vet because he seemed to passout and urninated on himself. The vet gave him a shot of Benadryl and cortisone. His swelling has gone down but we had to make another visit earlier this morning because the hives came back in such big patches. The vet sent us home with prednisone but also a lot of warnings. We have just been treating him with the Benadryl 1mg per pound he is 38 pounds. He seems to be hot always seeking non carpeted surfaces. He also seems to act like he is losing his mind at times. Do you have any suggestions? Should we go ahead and use the prednisone or is it that dangerous? I really appreciate any help you can offer. I don't know anyone else to ask and our vet will not open until tomorrow. The vet told us that this drug is one that would have to be tapered off. You can't just give it to him and when the symptoms end just take him off of it. He has this rash on him now and is sedated because of the Benadryl. The predisone was given by the vet at t dose of 20mg. Bandit is to take 10mg every 12 hours. The vet warned that prednisone can also cause blood in the stool, vomiting and diarreah (sp) Should I risk the extra side-effects?

amyalva9 replied: "i dont know."

Wren replied: "As long as it's prednisone that the vet prescribed I would definitely give it to him. Just heed whatever warnings the vet gave you. Although prednisone prescribed over a short period of time should not cause any permanent problems, so I'm not sure what warnings the vet could have given."

john_mason4438 replied: "Prednisone should help with the itching and swelling as should benadryl. 1 mg per pound for Benadryl seems like a lot. 50mg is the pre ion adult dose for a 150 pound adult. I would give a 38 pound dog 1/2 of a 25 mg caplet. Prednisone in the prescribed dosage is not dangerous. I had a dog who took it regularly. He died at age 17."

jxoxolove replied: "If you are giving medicine under the direction of a vet then it's ok...but it's not a good idea to give medication to a dog on your own. Dogs may react to a medication differently then humans and the doses aren't the same."

KimbeeJ replied: "Prednisone is safe if administered under a vets instructions. Don't be afraid to use it for his hives...he needs it to get fast relief!! The only time prednisone can be a problem is if high doses are given every day for a long time. Your vet is not going to do that unless it is being used for chemotherapy. The correct dose for benedryl in dogs IS 1mg per pound. It can be given every 8-12 hours. Biggest side effect is drowsiness. Try hosing him off with cool water for some relief as well."

flowerchild replied: "The reason the vet gave you the warnings about the Prednisone is because you have to be careful with steroids. When taking these meds, the dosage usually has to be stepped down gradually, not to stop suddenly. My dog was on them for a long time for respiratory problems, and they did tend to make her feel hot. Best to do what the emergency vet said at least until you see your own vet tomorrow. I also noticed Prednisone made her thirsty and she drank a lot of water, and of course this made her need to go outside a lot."

CallyPoppy replied: "Go for it I give my dog benadryl, for itchy skin and hives. the amount you give them depnes on how heavy they are."

m j replied: "I personally would not give my dogs prednisone for something as minor as hives, nor would I take it for that. Steriods are VERY hard on the body, ours as well as our animals. I do not understand why human doctors are so careful with prescribing it, yet some vets give it out for any little thing. If you do decide to use it, be prepared for appetite and drinking increases, as well as possible aggression tendencies. It is your choice, but not MY dogs, unless absolutely neccessary."

Mary F replied: "If your dog is having a systemic allergic reaction, he needs to be on the Prednisone. It must be given as directed or the animal could become ill if taken off it suddenly. Benadryl is an antihistime and couterdicts the effect of the prednisone. Do not give them at the same time. Use one or the other. If your dog has had vaccinations in the last 48 hours, he could be having a severe allergic reaction to that. Regardless of the cause, you need to following the instructions of the DVM. PS...If you use Benadryl on your dog, it should be the children's liquid...not adult....not capsule."

Side effects of prednisone treatment on my dog? My 9 month old Corgi is taking prednisone for his masticatory muscle myositis. He takes 20 mgs every twelve hours. He's been on it for about a week now. His mouth seems less painfull for him, so I think the treatment is working. I know the common side effects, such as panting, drinking alot and urinating alot. But what about other side effects? Such as the attitude and behavior changes my dog will go though.

River Hermit replied: "Hello..if he's been on them a week & you haven't noticed any behavorial...etc changes, might be for him they are none...otherwise you should ask your vet or it might be on a care sheet of some sort, beings it's a steroid !! Take Care :)"

DP replied: "Side Effects Side effects seen in dogs include polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, poor haircoat, GI disturbance, diarrhea, vomiting, weight gain, GI ulceration, pancreatitis, lipidemia, elevated liver enzymes, diabetes mellitus, muscle wasting, and possible behavioral changes. Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia may be seen in dogs even on short-term therapy. Corticosteroids can cause or worsen gastric ulcers. Precautions Chronic or inappropriate use of corticosteroids, including prednisone, can cause life threatening hormonal and metabolic changes. Adverse effects due to corticosteroid treatment usually occur with long-term administration of the drug, especially when high doses are used. Alternate day therapy with short acting preparations is preferred. Animals who have received long-term therapy should be withdrawn slowly by tapering the dosage and prolonging the interval between doses. Corticosteroids suppress immune response. Animals receiving systemic corticosteroids may be more susceptible to bacterial or viral infections. Systemic corticosteroids can mask signs of infection, such as an elevated temperature. Systemic corticosteroids are contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections. (The treatment of Addison's disease may be considered an exception.) Prednisone must be converted to prednisolone in the liver. Animals in hepatic failure should receive prednisolone rather than prednisone. Corticosteroids should be avoided or used very carefully in young animals both because of immune suppression and the risk of GI ulcers."

tinkerbellnjk replied: "Prednisone is a steroid. I've never had a pet that took it, but my brother does. I would assume it would have kind of the same side effects. Weight gain, Moody-ness, loss of appetite."

Big red replied: "DP hit the nail on the head."

~beagleluvr~ replied: "my beagle was on that and i noticed that she wasn't as lively and just not herself.. she was taking 10mg every other day. i took her off of it and she has perked up, back like she was. this was for allergies. but i'm going another route with that and it seems to be working."

My dog is on prednisone, appetite has increased should I let him as much he wants I fear his stomach may turn? I have a 117 lb. dog who is on prednisone (short term), he has developed increase thurst but no accidents but pees for quite sometime. He will urinate anywhere from 35 to 50 seconds at a time. This is his second week he has been on it. It seemed as though he was losing weight instead of gaining and now he has just started wanted to eat a lot more. Should I let him eat as much as he wants. I have been letting him more eat smaller portions throughout the day instead of his usual 2 feedings aday which he would have some food left in his bowl. But now his is scarfing down his food and begging for more. Since he was scarfing the food down I am now feeding by small handfuls. I am worried that with the increased drinking and appetite his stomach may turn. So I didn't know if should let him as much as he wants or keep his food limited? Thanks for any information

Daphne replied: "If you let him eat as much as he wants, he will gain weight. I'd contact my veterinarian and discuss this with him or her."

BunnuvaSitch replied: "The increased appetite and increased thirst are side-effects of the steroid. I would advise you to feed him as you would normally. He may be cranky for a while because he wants more to eat, but you said yourself that this is only a short-term thing."

gringo4541 replied: "You really need to discuss all of this with your Vet. We don't know why he is on Pred. but your concerns about torsion are real and something to avoid if possible!!! I would suspect that your Vet would want you to keep the dog limited to it's usual amount of food so that it doesn't get fat. That wouldn't be healthy for it at all. Do discuss all concerns with your Vet, he knows your dog personally."

DogAddict replied: "Think of him right now as a person on a diet. If he is around food he is going to want it. Don't allow him to eat as much as he wants. Continue feeding him as you always have. You don't want to start any habits. As for slowing him down... put a kong toy or a baseball in his bowl to slow him down. Play with him more, keep his mind busy and off food. Good luck!"

pami3338 replied: "Keep feeding him the same way you always have. Play with him more to distract him. Over feeding can lead to more problems. Over weight, and more health issues. Feeding him at feeding time small handfuls to slow him down is a great idea. Do not just let him eat how he wants right now. He is on a drug that make even people very hungry and nutty. Water won't hurt him as long as it is in a proper amount. Do not let him drink like a mad man. We even as human's can drink so much water can kill. Hopefully it won't be much longer and he won't need the meds anymore. Your vet should have gone over this with you. I have many dog's that pee for a minute str8 so don't panic."

krimsongem84 replied: "these are normal side effects from steroids. i would suggest feeding smaller more frequent meals to help with his appetite, instead of larger meals. but an increase in thirst, urination and appetite or normal effects with this drug!"

How long does it take for the side effects of prednisone (steriod) to wear off in a dog? Hi, We have a German Shepherd Dog who has been prescibed prednisone for an inflamatory condition. Throughout the Course of the drugs he has been unable to stop urinating (i.e. dripping constantly). He finished the course of drugs Sunday and there has been no change in the side effects. Has anyone had a similar experience? How long did the side effects last after you finished the drugs. We're worried he's been permanently damaged. Thanks for any advice...

debbigilbert@sbcglobal.net replied: "it takes about 2 weeks to see the frequent urination diminish."

deltadawn replied: "Was he WEANED off prednisone gradually,... as he should have been gradually dosed on? Pred. does stay in system for awhile. 1 of the side affects is lots of thirst,.. which prob. contributed to his frequent peeing. There is a course of dosage for meds. like Pred. which is gradual increase of dose at onset of giving and then a decrease of weaning off period. Otherwise dangerous. Approx. a 5-7 days before pred. side affects should subside. Hope this helps. Gd. luck."

Iggy replied: "Just it does humans, same side effects, they use the bathroom alot, it is cleansing the system, by making the dog or person tinkle alot...it will take about 10 days for it to wear off, don't worry, each day the dog will start to taper back on the peeing...be patient...this is normal"

Allo! replied: "my dog is currently being weaned off the pred. i hope your dog was too. he's on 80mg a day for 5 days, 40 mg for 5 days and now we're doing 40mg every other day until it's gone. he's peeing like crazy too, and soooo thirsty. and he's a bit googly-eyed. i can tell already though, that it's a little bit less intense than it was when he first started, and i'm guessing that in a week or so after we stop it all together he'll be ok. you should give your dog at least a week to come 'down' before you get concerned. i was put on prednisone last summer for kidney problems, and i had the same problem as the dogs do! it's no fun!"

john n replied: "my husky has been on prednisone through out the summer months for a few years,he has seasonal allergies and breaks out in raw sores and hot spots where he is so miserable that he is feverish and itchy until the drugs kick in.did u wean him off slowly? with bear he starts out with 3 pills a day for 3 days then cut down to 2 then 1. after a week he is off the drugs until the next out break which is a few weeks later or if he happens to get into wet grass or pollen. sometimes the cause is air boure until the weather gets cool and he does not walk or run in the fields.give ur dog benadryl every day also to help his condition.they pee a lot and do have a hard time controlling their bladders along with hunger.make sure u try the meds for a few days and wean him off to make sure he is not getting to much.he will get control again but the side effects can be infection in their prostate when they take the drug continually.if he is itchy give him benadryl 2 x a day and rub him down with medicated oatmeal dog conditioner on the raw spots.call ur vet if he continues dripping in a few days just in case of a urinary infection.it is a good drug to help with allergies but like most drugs the side effects suck. i hope this info helps a little"

Is it ok to give my dog prednisone and benadryl at the same time? My boxer had a swollen face due to an allergic reaction yesterday. This morning the vet gave us some prednisone and she was ok all day. After going to the park, she broke out in hives. We gave her the prednisone but i'm not exactly sure if that's what she needed. Should i give her a dose of benadryl as well?? I know she has allergies, and i want her to be as comfortable as possible. Any advice??

john ross replied: "you really need to call and ask the vet. I wouldn't think it would hurt but a check with the vet is always a good idea. Plus you would need to know what dose to give,"

Low calorie filler to mix with dog food while Boxer is on Prednisone? I have a two year old Boxer who is on his second round of Prednisone treatment for Aseptic Meningitis, like the first round his appetite is out of control. Is there something that I can feed him along with his normal dog food that will help to control his hunger without gaining much weight?

chummermandi replied: "Maybe mixed shredded veg?"

lolly04 replied: "We used to feed my dog carrots, because he had an insatiable appetite, but was starting to get overweight. The carrots were recommended to us by the vet as a substitute for treats, and to give him when he was begging for food. You could give them to him in chunks, or just shred some and put them in the bowl with his normal food."

mommyme replied: "maybe cooked Rice"

Mutt Dog Lover replied: "Not really. He might gain a few pounds if you just gave him more dog food while he's on Prednisone. If that's okay with you. Just work off the pounds when this is over. Good luck. -MDL"

julie d replied: "In a matter of fact there is. You can cut down on the amount of dog food and add low sodium canned green beans in it's place. Of course, it would be even better if you used fresh or frozen beans, but the canned just makes it easier because they are already pre-cooked."

panache replied: "Fresh or frozen carrots, green beans apples, pears, squash, all will fill him up."

my dog has CUPS lesion on her gum. antibiotic/prednisone does not help much? I have most of her teeth pull out because the vet suggest it was caused by allergy. The somatitis cause the lesions. I cleaned her teeth daily with oral rinse and prednisone . But the lesions just getting worse. Do I really have to pull all her teeth out?

ANNE K replied: "Yes you do. Conditions like this will only clear for defininte when the periodontal ligament is removed and this is the ligament holding the tooth in the socket so the only way to eliminate it is extractions. Humans get similar conditions"

Karen, RN replied: "I had a dog with allergies - figured out through my own research that it was due to additives in dog foods. Do a google search for Solid Gold Dog Foods. They are amazing!! No more allergies, happy healthy dog! All natural food without the additives that cause so many health issues for dogs. And just a couple bucks a bag more - but saves ALOT on vet bills. I think they're web site is: . GOOD LUCK!!"
